Probably my last okra, peppers and beans this season. Dropping to 2 °C tonight and tomorrow, then lows of 8 to 10 °C for the next 10 days. I planted lots of greens so I’m still getting a couple cups of greens, enough for a few cooked servin
Judging by the weather forecast, our rainy season starts tomorrow. Last call for tomatoes and huckleberries. The tomatoes we harvested this morning, taking everything of any size and bringing them indoors to ripen. The huckleberries were picked also, and are in the cooler to be dealt within a day or two - I’ll make jam, shrub, and liqueur.
Not much left for us in the garden after today: a few cabbages, a few hot peppers, a little lettuce, some waning scallions, some dormant broccolini. I have spinach and peas under cloche to winter over, and should be able to raid that spinach a few times before it, too, goes dormant.
Very nice haul! I’m surprised at our picking of today - the raspberries keep plugging away, got some tomatoes, and even a surprising number of bush beans (that we thought were finished).
Do you know of anybody who’s still got seed potatoes in stock? I just checked Johnnyseeds and they’re sold out of everything. Looking for Yukon Gold if possible, or purple
Some of the sugar rush peach seemed to be drying on the pla, so I figured I’d try drying some. I guess I left them too long, but they are a nice color!
Try Wood Prairie Family Farm. That’s where I get seed potatoes and they’ve always done well. Plus, their variety listings are amazing. They’ll be shipping after Nov. 1.
I just use regular Yukon Gold from the farmers’ market or grocery store when I can’t find seed potatoes.
Store them in a paper bag in a dark place at room temp for a few days and eyes will develop. I cut the potatoes into a few pieces, each containing 2 or 3 eyes, and plant those pieces.
Oh man- sorry about the dreaded Covid, hope you aren’t too sick and get well soon. I picked up a cold in Manhattan, kinda surprised I didn’t get a hundred other things too what with the crowds of huddled masses and all.
Came home to one eggplant turning yellow, one red jalapeno, and a ton of basil.
