2022 Veggie gardens!

Rosemary will often root from a cutting! If you see some out in the world, pinch off a stem and see if it might root in water. Here’s hoping for a good container garden season.

I plant rosemary in a pot, since it can’t withstand the snow and ice during our winters. It actually grows quite quickly, as I usually have to re-pot or split the plant after each year. Sad, but I already have dwarf citrus trees that I have to drag back inside, and my back can’t take another giant bush-like plant to lug in and out each season. My aunt took some of the rosemary plant I had to split off and it was thriving quite well at her place. The rosemary though does nothing for my bunnies and squirrels. They were taking bites out of my tomato plants that were right next to the rosemary last year. :unamused:

No deer in my 'hood thankfully, but lots of skunks and even the occasional turkey family. I have 3 peonies that grow to the side of my front yard, though only one plant flowers each year - weird. I’ll have to check out some of the other flowers. I am trying to germinate English lavender seeds right now (in my fridge), so fingers crossed I’ll get a few plants out of them.

I have to wait until Memorial Day for most of the seeds. We often get a hard frost in late May.

Don’t forget the mid April blizzard. Snow tires are staying on until the end of the month.

That is a beautiful collection! I can’t wait to get into the garden this year. The garlic is coming up nicely and the onion sets arrived–they will probably go in this weekend along with Swiss Chard seeds. A friend is growing Sugar Rush hot peppers for us in his greenhouse; those were a huge hit last year.

Hey…I had to pay for my beit alpha cucumber seeds from Baker’s Creek. I have little seeds in and getting some nice germination so far. My shishito seeds are always the last to germinate, so waiting for them patiently. If I’m lucky these will be strong enough to go outside towards the end of the month. I’m trying shell peas for the first time and they are coming out strong! I’m a little nervous that I need a mini-trellis for this thing before they go outdoors. As a plus though I didn’t even think about pea shoots and leaves, and I hope these grow strong enough that I’ll get some pea shoots for a stir fry out of this too.

I’ve been growing other brands of Shishito, and I find they tend to have a lower germination rate. I just keep planting them, and sow some directly outside once the chance of frost is minimal.

We’re looking at 90+ this weekend.

First out of the dirt harvest this year: Jerusalem artichokes, Fuseau variety. I planted these many years ago and they have spread themselves. Apparently, once you plant them, you have them for life if you don’t over harvest.

Today’s pictures, starting with @bogman peppers.

Okay, the first one is not Bogman’s

This one is I think Sugar Rush Peach

And these should be Aji Charapita

Fingerling potatoes; Maybe La Ratte

Mostly Bogman’s grey shallots

More potatoes

Some grapes; I never get this right

Grapes Thompson?

Grapes Perlette?

Bolted collards and some lettuce

Sugar snaps…doomed. It was 86 f today.

There are a bunch of newer varieties, which taste better and don’t spread as quickly. These tend to cluster near the plant: Supernova, Big Bertha, Gute Gelbe, Urodny, and Topstar, to name a few. Sadly, Oikos Tree Crops, where I got a lot of these, has closed down, K. Asmus has retired. Since sunchokes have a lot of indigestible starch (inulin), eat small quantities and see how your body reacts before increasing how much you eat.

You’re off to a great start! Those peppers look very happy and will enjoy the hotter weather. That’s quite a load on the Sugar Snaps! I think you’ll love both the Aji Charapita and Sugar Rush Peach. The former makes a delicious bbq sauce for fish, shellfish, pork or poultry, when blended with sauteed mangoes, onions, catsup and cider vinegar. I pickled the SR Peach like pepperocini, cored, with a little pickle crisp and sliced turmeric (for color), and they’re delicious!
