Kolobok’s first year was wonderful, as the owners built a thriving business selling lunches in front of Salesforce Tower and other busy spots in San Francisco. They also sated appetites with their variety of filled blini at hugely popular venues through Off the Grid, such as Fort Mason and the Presidio Picnic. And they were named one of the 20 best food trucks by the San Francisco Chronicle for dishes such as their braised cabbage rolls stuffed with turkey and rice in tomato sauce. In the evenings and on weekends, they kept busy serving their pelmeni and piroshki at local breweries and music events.

excerpt:

He started Califia Farms in 2010, zeroing in on quality nut milks made with California almonds as a way to fight industrial agriculture. The company has grown to produce other vegan milks, creamers, butters and coffee beverages, and Califia’s extra creamy “barista blends” milks are used in cafes around the country. Last year, it raised a landmark $225 million in the quest to expand globally while maintaining significant sustainability goals, such as transitioning to 100% renewable power and achieving Zero Waste Certification.

I think that this is Luke Tsai’s first article at his new job as Food Editor at KQEDarts -

Coconut lovers, however, will rejoice at the prospect of finding the flavor in a variety of different iterations. Valencia glazes the mini lilikoi poppyseed pound cake with coconut and passionfruit. The butter mochi is filled with a coconut custard and topped with coconut chips and macadamia nuts. Her four-inch chocolate haupia pies are topped with a coconut custard, whipped cream and coconut chips.

Eve Batey, who was a writer and editor at Eater San Francisco for about 18 months, is now writing for Berkeleyside/Oaklandside.

Though not directly food-related but a good sign for local journalism, at Oaklandside Darwin BondGraham and Ali Winston have teamed up again to cover local politics and the police. BondGraham and Winston were co-winners a few years ago of the George Polk journalism for their coverage of the Oakland police sex scandal. Winston apparently has returned from his gig at the NY Times Metro desk.

excerpt:
Owners Mieko Scott, and her daughter, Kami Quiñones, change the menu at Hella Nuts every day based on what’s in season. This practice keeps customers at their West Oakland plant-based restaurant intrigued and guessing what’s going to be on the menu next. Some days they’ll offer Phish and Grits, with the “fish” made out of fried banana blossom; other days they’ll serve Ikuko soba noodle soup, chock full of mushrooms, ginger and kelp in a chickpea miso broth; or maybe there’ll have shepherd’s pie, featuring Hella Nut’s signature ground walnut meat.

. Hella Nuts is open for pickup from 4-6 p.m.; 7-11 p.m., Monday (but closed on Mondays after Sunday brunch), Tuesday and Thursday; 6 p.m. to midnight, Friday; 2:30-5 p.m.; 7-11 p.m., Saturday; 1-5 p.m. every other Sunday (next brunch is April 11). Orders must be made online for contact-free pickup. The menu goes live at 5 a.m. daily.

I hope the addition of Elena Kadvany will mean more coverage of the peninsula/San Jose (even though I don’t live there). There seem like a lot of interesting, small mom and pops that are hard to sort through with my only occasional visits.
Due to the collapse in local journalism (funding) and what Alden Global Capital has turned The Mercury News and The East Bay Times into it seems like the Chron could expand their coverage into these markets and get more hits/subscriptions.

Congrats @ekadvany! Hopefully the type of in-depth food articles you wrote for 650 will make it to the Chron as well!
