10 best Italian subs in the DC area

The list is indeed of the former – Italian subs aka hoagies.

I’d love to learn of other types of Italian sandwiches in the area, and also places in the area whose bread you like – if there ae any.

in nyc, All’Antico Vinaio has good italian sandwiches in the style which I believe @buonaforchetta is describing, unfortunately, no branches in your area.

best,

My favorite in the DC area will probably always be the G Man at Mangialardo’s. The double cheese gives it a kick that really sets it apart. And the owner is just old school cool. Love the place. Used to live 4 blocks over on E Street and was there fairly frequently. The camaraderie in the line between people from all over who were willing to go further and wait a bit longer for the best sandwiches around was fairly cool.
A. Litteri was good, but not as good and further afield for me, so I went much less frequently.
Both Italian Stores are good in my book, Alessandro runs a tight ship at Spout Run but I have to admit that I like the Westover location for its neighborhood better. Milano rules the roost for me. Though the Capri is good too. I always wanted to ask them to add mozzarella to the provolone on my Milano but never did. Operating under the “more cheese is always better” concept.
Stachowski’s is a place I wanted to like but it was an odd sort of sandwich. I will include my impression below. It actually was better the next day when I finished the un-eaten half. I think the delay in my getting to a table was part of the problem so I would definitely try it again.
