[Wollongong, Australia] Lunch at The Bavarian

We were up in Wollongong (2 hours north of Sydney) last week and decided to have lunch at the ever-dependable The Bavarian on the corner of Crown and Keira Streets. It’s the Wollongong outpost of a large chain (30 branches & counting) of Bavarian restaurants spanning New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, with outlets in Canberra and even Auckland, New Zealand. The menu at the Wollongong branch spanned the usual gamut of Bavarian food, localised somewhat to suit local preferences.

Our lunch there consisted of:

  1. Mac and cheese balls, with blue cheese mayo

  2. The Bavarian Tasting Platter, which consisted of crispy pork belly, sausages, schnitzel, sauerkraut, red cabbage, mash and Granny Smith apple compote:

  3. Jägerschnitzel - chicken schnitzel, with wild mushroom compote, broccoli, slaw and chips:

  4. Über-schnitzel chicken schnitzel with rocket leaves, semi-dried tomatoes and parmesan cheese.

Service is friendly and efficient. Bright, airy restaurant with communal, Bavarian bierhaus-style seating arrangements.
