Pupuseria La Familiar - Locations in Maryland and Fall Church

Maryland stalwart La Familiar has opened a Falls Church City location, and it is instantly the best Salvadoran food in NoVa. It has a big menu that includes quite a few items you might have trouble finding elsewhere. Especially pupusas made with various herbs. Many, many other items as well, so you have the option of tasting the full range of Salvadoran cuisine. Normally I care little for refried bean or white cheese, but here the beans have a penetrating flavor and the cheese is more creamy than salty. They also make a really nice pina to drink. I will explore more.

We lived just north of Wheaton and they were on the way and open late for trips home from the restaurant. Their pupusas are beyond category. La Familiar and La Casita are the class of pupusas in Maryland. If they are as good in Falls Church, they will be one of the best spots around.

Steve. Have you tried Taqueria Picoso in Alexandria? It is right by Mark Center not far from the Clyde’s on Beauregard. They make their own masa and the food is very hearty and earthy. They have people with chops in the kitchen and you can really see it in the food.

Have not been to Picoso YET. Will get there very soon, tho.

Try their tinga, pastor. They usually have a seafood tostada which is a sloppy mess. They have a large patio which is nice as you are in the middle of suburbia and you can almost convince yourself you are somewhere much more pastoral.
