New Places of Interest? - Houston

Spicy Eggs - new Indian place a little north of Little India proper, in the same center with Jerusalem Halal World Market and Restaurante Guatemala, specializing in egg dishes all day long.

We don’t have many Indian restaurants open for breakfast or serving breakfast dishes so far as I know - Pondicheri, for one. I’ve encountered egg curry on the menus at a couple of places in the Stafford-Missouri City area that cater to the expats from Kerala, but that’s it.

The menu doesn’t include much in the way of descriptions but Alice Levitt blogged about it.

Afghan Express - five years ago we had only one Afghani restaurant (Afghan Cuisine on 6 in Sugar Land) but several have popped up. This one is just south of Westpark on Hillcroft it looks like.

I’ve been to AC (the best of what I’ve had), Afghan Village, south of 59 on Hillcroft, and Saffron (but I ordered from the Persian side of the menu). Looks like the location of Afghan’s Dashtarkhwan on 59 next to Lucy has closed but the one in Sugar Land is still open. I’m interested in this new one.

Anybody else noted any other new places not receiving gluts of hype in the foodie media that they’re interested in?

Ginger and Fork has a soft opening this week, I’m excited about this new venture having become friendly with the owner over the years. It’s Hong Kong and Canton food with a local flair.

Aha! in the old La Fisheria place. That sounds interesting to me, too.

I’ll add to mine Little Liberty in the Village - never been to any of the Liberty places but think I might try this one.

Drove by Afghan Express - it’s in the former Sagar space, across from Sri Bilaji Bhavan, an offshoot of Shiv Sagar down by Himalaya that didn’t make it. A big banner on the side of the building proclaims a buffet.

There’s another Afghani restaurant that opened in January by the name of Chopan Kabob House. Co-worker of mine told me about it and wants to go but I haven’t come across reviews for it.

OOOOOOH! Close to me!

Whaddayasay Jaymes? You in?

Yes I had seen that one. Here’s what comes up when you search for Afghan food on Yelp.

There are others there I’ve never heard of either.

A couple of reviews for Chopan - nothing I’m inclined to put much stock in. It’s a red flag to me when the first reviewer is from out-of-town and it’s a rave. I’ll be trying Afghan Express before I head out there.

Maybe it’s not of interest to you but it could be of interest to others who come across this thread since it’s titled new places of interest. That’s why I posted about it.

Yes, thank you. Obviously I realize that since I started the thread. You’re very welcome to post here about any places you hear about. So is anybody. That’s what this thread is for. And anyone is welcome to express their interest, or lack thereof, in any that anybody lists.

If you like Slik Chocolate, Caffe Bene, Sweet Paris Creperie and CoCo Crepes, Waffles and Coffee, you’'ll like recently opened Doux Cafe.

Pictures from their Instagram:

According to the Houston Chronicle article, the chef Sammy Li cooked at Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong, a high end hotel and after that Sinh Sinh and Little Sheep Mongolian Hotpot. The chinese restaurant within that hotel is One Harbour Road- cantonese cuisine with a homestyle slant. If anyone goes, please ask about the chef’s experiences, specialities and skills. If he sounds skillful enough, perhaps you can entice him to make you something special off the menu, perhaps from the One Harbour Road menu!
