Chao Pescao, [San Francisco, Civic Center]

New Latin place, billed as “Cuban-Columbian” and indeed they have everything from arepas, empanadas, Cubanos, rope vieja, etc. Nice bright space with high ceilings and warm casual service. Fun cocktail menu of tropical drinks. I had the Coco Loco [Havana club white rum, vodka, tequila blanco, coconut cream, coconut water, lime juice]. It was pretty one note, overwhelmed by coconut cream. Kid had fresh squeezed pineapple juice and pork arepa [slow-cooked pork, sweet plantains, black bean, cilantro, chile de arbor]. She gave me a bite, it was very good. Fries were good too, twice cooked method, not sure what they fry them in but they had a beefy flavor. Chipotle aioli was a nice dipping sauce, but the garlic mojo didn’t really work as it doesn’t stick to the fries. I had the ropa vieja, which was also good, distinctive flavors of olives and tomato. Asked for some hot sauce and they brought out the Chile de arbor used in the arepas.
